The Career Start Healthcare Assistant Programme is a scheme to recruit and support individuals from various backgrounds to take their first steps into the healthcare role for General Practice or supporting those already in General Practice attain academic qualifications for the role.
The Programme’s duration is 27 months and currently consists of 11 Healthcare Assistants who work within practices across Sunderland whilst gaining academic qualifications.
The purpose of the scheme is to provide an opportunity to develop the skills and knowledge required to become a Healthcare Assistant which further supports our long term plan of sustaining General Practice in Sunderland by expanding our workforce.
The programme benefits host practices by providing an extra member of staff, with fully funded training costs and a substantial contribution to their salary costs
The programme is in 2 phases:
Phase one of the programme involves placements in surgeries and a combination of practice based vocational training as well as classroom based training. It is a 15 months long phase and leads to the attainment of the Care Certificate and a level 3 qualification.
Phase two is a 12 months programme which involves placements in surgeries and a combination of practice based vocational training as well as day release for university based training and Hospital visits leading to a diploma in higher education. The diploma is a new programme designed by Sunderland University in collaboration with Sunderland CCG, Sunderland Royal Hospital and Tyne and Wear Care Alliance to support health care assistant development and provide the opportunity for academic progression. 6 of the current 11 Healthcare Assistants have opted to on to Phase two of the programme.
HCA Salary is set at:
Phase One (first 15 months of programme) – £15,100pa (AfC Band 2, point 1)
Phase Two (next 12 months of programme) – £15,788pa (AfC Band 2, point 3)
Practices hosting a Career Start HCA contribute to the salary costs on a sliding scale in line with increasing skills and knowledge over the period of employment:
- 0-6 months 20% contribution
- 7 – 15 months 50% contribution
- 16 – 27 months 60% contribution
Throughout the programme the Career Start Healthcare Assistants are supported by our Career Start Lead Nurse
