Sunderland’s Practice Nurse Career Start Programme is a highly successful scheme to recruit and support 1st Level registered nurses, assisting them to take their first steps into a new and exciting career in Practice Nursing.
The 2-year programme consists of a cohort of up to 10 WTE Nurses who will work within practices as Practice Nurses whilst undertaking an academic qualification.
The programme’s purpose is to provide an opportunity for nurses to develop the skills and knowledge required to become a practice nurse therefore supporting the sustainability of General Practice in Sunderland by growing and developing the practice nursing team workforce.
The programme also benefits host practices by providing an extra qualified member of staff with fully funded training costs and a substantial contribution to their salary costs whilst supporting the development of practice nurse mentorship and skills mix
The Career Start Practice Nurses salaries range from £21,692 to £29,900 dependant on experience and qualifications. On-costs, such as National Insurance and pension contributions, will be added to this sum.
The salary contribution from the host practice is 50% of salary costs in Year 1, increasing to 60% of salary costs in Year 2
A Practice nurse mentorship allowance of £1,728 per 12 months (pro rata) is available for the Practice to support ongoing supervision
The programme is a 24-month structured programme containing practice placements and a number of educational elements such as:
- Cervical Cytology and Immunisation Training
- Advanced Diploma General Practice course – Sunderland University
- Advanced Diploma Chronic Disease – Sunderland University
Throughout the programme the Career Start Practice Nurses are supported by our Career Start Lead Nurse
The Sunderland GP Alliance currently employs 5 Career Start Practice Nurses, each of whom is assigned to a Practice in the Sunderland area. The first programme has seen great success and a second programme commenced September 2017 with a further 9 Career start Practice Nurses starting the programme.
