The GP Extended Access service at Bunnyhill Primary Care Centre has received an ‘outstanding’ rating for its leadership following an inspection by healthcare regulators the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in May 2022.

The report, which was published in June (click here) has rated the service as ‘good’ overall. However, inspectors praised the service for several areas of outstanding practice.

Inspectors praised the service for ensuring that patient’s voices were heard when developing and improving services. The service was also praised for ensuring that services are meeting the needs of patients and the local population. All of which contributed towards the ‘Outstanding’ rating for being ‘well-led.’

The GP Extended Access service at Bunnyhill Primary Care Centre provides services on an evening and over weekends and is managed and delivered by Sunderland GP Alliance (SGPA).

Other key comments include:

  • The service had good systems to manage risk so that safety incidents were less likely to happen.
  • Staff involved and treated people with compassion, kindness, dignity and respect.
  • Patients were able to access care and treatment from the service within an appropriate timescale for their needs.
  • There was a strong focus on improvement within the service by seeking out and embedding new ways of providing care and treatment.

Karen Swaile, Head of Federated Clinical Services at SGPA, said: “I am absolutely delighted that the service has been rated outstanding for being well-led. The inspection provided us with a great opportunity to share the all of the fantastic work and service that Sunderland GP Alliance delivers on behalf of the city.

“It was a very positive visit that demonstrated how people from across the organisation contribute to ensure a quality service is delivered and maintained for the local population.

“The planning and work carried out prior to the visit saw the wider team of SGPA Federated Services and General Practice coming together to ensure pre CQC requirements were met and the service was well represented on the day.

“I am extremely grateful to all of the team who supported the inspection and would like to extend my congratulations on a great CQC report.”
