Sunderland GP Alliance (SGPA) Federation hosts an NHS England (NHSE) clinical pharmacy pilot. There are seven pharmacists (5.25 whole time equivalent) based across twelve practices, covering a patient population of around 95,000. On top of NHSE funding, Sunderland CCG provides financial support in a joint venture which differs from most other pilots. The pilot started May 2016 and ends March 2020 and SGPA is the employer.
The model demonstrates initiative in working together across commissioner/provider arms supporting alternative funding streams to produce meaningful outcomes for patients through supporting GP practices.
The model was recently featured as a case study in the future focused finance document “General practice new ways of working”.
